Pete Firman: Marvels (4/5)
Anyone who has seen his television show will know exactly what to expect and Firman doesn’t disappoint. He’s quick, cheery and very clever, deliberately under-stating his tricks to achieve maximum elation when he pulls them off.
A simple egg and handkerchief routine comes with a head-shaking surprise, as does his finale, an ‘how does he do that?’ calculation from random numbers supplied by the audience, which has an added twist.
Firman is good at engaging with his audience, maintaining a dialogue throughout the show. His patter is a mix of Eric ‘heh-hey’ Morecambe and high-pitched Paul Daniels, perhaps on account of also coming from Middlesbrough, though neither would resort to frequent use of expletives which are a needless inclusion in his script.
That aside, he’s become one of the stand-out performers in British variety, blending his tricks with a laugh-out-loud comedy routine. It’s no surprise that he’s playing to packed audiences.
