Reception for Forum
Representatives of one Edinburgh’s biggest conferences of the year attended an invitation-only reception at Edinburgh Castle.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon welcomed 180 guests representing 1,400 delegates at the three-day Social Enterprise World Forum, focusing on the contribution of the sector to the global economy.
Ms Sturgeon said in her address that the last time it was held in Edinburgh was in 2008 ahead of the financial crash.
“Since then people have increasingly looked for new ways of achieving success. They are turning to the social enterprise model and Scotland has a strong track record with 560 social enterprises, an 8% growth since 2015 and collectively employing 80,000 people.”
Noting that the guests represented 16 nations, she added that “we are also eager to learn from others.”
She was introduced to a delegation from Ethiopia which hosts the event next year. They gave her gift of a scarf and home-produced coffee.
The conference at the EICC features an address from actor social enterprise supporter Michael Sheen, who is one of 215 speakers.
