Review: 6 Feet, 3 Shoes (rating 4/5)
Scotland and Spain are delightfully united by the friendship of three girls who share a love of movement and dance.
6 Feet, 3 Shoes, which world premiered on the opening day of the Fringe, is choreographed and directed by Scotland-born Jen Wren. It is 50 minutes of raw energy, rhythm and fun, performed by dance company, Slanjayvah Danza.
The performance brings together traditional Scottish and Spanish dance moves to tell a story of blossoming friendships, love, birth, and death. It shows that language barriers can be transcended through movement. It is both joyous and deeply touching, with the performers amused by their differences and comforting each other over their loss and distress.
Jen Wren also performs the role of narrator and singer, an unusual and effective device that helped guide us through their coming together as friends.
Dancers Charlotte Matthiessen, Leticia Piruletas and Jen Wren are accompanied by fiddle player and musical director Amy Geddes, who also sings, and the exquisite folky tones of Jen Wren and Caterina McEvoy.
The studios at Dancebase allow the audience to be up-close to the performers enabling them to see the perspiration on the skin and feel the dancers’ breath as they perform effortless movements.
This show is an impressive sample of a range at Dancebase that will delight all dance lovers.
Dancebase, Grassmarket, until 18 August
