Whighams Jazz Club:
Whighams Jazz Club in Edinburgh marked its eighth birthday with a special appearance by Liane Carroll, regarded as one of Britain’s finest jazz and soul singers.
She has collaborated with such artists as Sir Paul McCartney, Gerry Rafferty and Long John Baldry, and she agreed to perform at Whighams with her long-time friend, the pianist Brian Kellock.
The pair gave a virtuoso performance to a 150-strong audience, one of the venue’s bigger turnouts and justifying the faith put in the jazz nights by owner Nicholas Henderson who turned it into a bar in 1983.
He was approached by Kevin Dorrian and Graham Knox to stage jazz performances every Sunday evening and they have become a fixture of Edinburgh’s live music scene.
“I give them free rein and it has been good for the bar,” said Mr Henderson who acquired the former wholesale wine merchant for 40 years.
“They have a good following and Sunday nights and bring people in when it would normally be very quiet.”
Liane Carroll will be performing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.
