Oscars: big wins for Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody and Colman

February 25, 2019 by Julena Drumi Leave a Comment

The story of a nightclub bouncer’s friendship with a black musician fought off a strong list of challengers to be named best picture at the 91st Academy Awards.

Green Book snatched the prize from Netflix’s Roma whose backers had spent more than $25 million in a bid to build on its success at the Baftas.

The Mexican drama, however, was rewarded with best director for Alfonso Cuaro, and awards for foreign language feature and cinematography.

Rami Malek picked up best actor prize for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

In an evening which was light on hosts but weightier on inclusion politics, Malek, the son of Egyptian immigrants, told the Hollywood audience: “We made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself,” he said. “The fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.”

Olivia Colman beat Glenn Close to win best actress for her role as a mercurial monarch in The Favourite.

Two Black Panther crew members made Oscar history by becoming the first black winners in their categories.

Ruth Carter won the costume design trophy, and Hannah Beachler shared the production design prize with Jay Hart.

A Star is Born, an early awards season favourite, had to settle for best song trophy for Lady Gaga’s Shallow.
